Jane Swift becomes the first woman governor of Massachusetts.

Swift (R), formerly the lieutenant governor, succeeds A. Paul Cellucci, who resigns to become U.S. Ambassador to Canada. She becomes the first woman acting governor in state history and, at 36, the youngest woman governor in U.S. history.
